New Orleans Heater Service, Repair and Maintenance Becomes More Imortant In The Fall

There are several useful guides published by the DOE regarding your heating and air conditioning systems.  If you click the links above you will find the Guide To Energy Efficient Systems.  This guide will walk you through proper system maintenance, duct repair and maintenance and new system selection.

Fall is a great time to tighten up your home and systems for Winter by sealing windows and doors and performing maintenance on your furnace or air handler.  If you could see the dust that accumulates on your gas heater's heat exchanger or your electric air handler's heat strips you would begin to understand why a number of home fires a year are blamed on un-maintained systems.  All of these systems had safety controls designed to protect families but controls are like your smoke detector...you can only be sure if you test it.

Fall is also a good time to shop for replacement systems.  You can do it at your own pace, rather than be forced to be uncomfortable by a mid-Summer breakdown.

Surgi's is offering $30 off of heater maintenance through November 15.  As an added bonus, Trane and Surgi's are offering year end equipment and financing specials to save you even more money.

Need a new system?  Surgi's can help.  Need a healthier, more comfortable life?  We can change the way you feel about your home.

Why Are My Windows And Air Conditioning Ducts Sweating?

Solutions to the Case of the Sweating Duct

Reprint of an article dated Mar 1, 2007 12:00 PM, By Kevin O'Neill

It's that time of year when windows are sweating and people are wondering if their air conditioning systems are working properly.  Usually they are, but to be better informed we are republishing an article we published last year.  Enjoy.

With the ever-increasing popularity of putting the air conditioning ducts outside the conditioned space; many contractors and homeowners in humid climates are now experiencing sweating ducts. Most of these sweating ducts are carrying cool supply air, although sometimes return air ducts can sweat, especially if the house is kept very cold and the return ducts run through cool vented crawlspaces.
Ducts sweat because the outside surfaces of the ducts are below the dew point of the air in their immediate surroundings. The primary ways to stop ducts from sweating is to raise the surface temperature of the ducts or to lower the dew point of the air surrounding the duct by some form of dehumidification. The dew point of air is the temperature at which the amount of water vapor in the air is the maximum amount the air can hold. The dew point is the same as air at 100% relative humidity (see Table 1).
Make The Ducts Warmer
There are several ways to raise the outside surface temperature of the ducts. The first is to raise the temperature of the air inside the ducts.

Bad News

It's official, 100% of air conditioning companies are dishonest! At least, that's the implication by Jeff Rosen's report on the Today Show. We know that's not the case but to protect the innocent potential victims, Surgi's offers free second opinions on repair estimates.
Surgi's Offers Free Second Opinions!
If you have a suspicious repair estimate or just want the peace of mind of knowing that a second company agrees, call Surgi's at 469-4232. We'll come out and verify the other company's diagnosis and if you present us with another company's invoice dated within 30 days, you pay nothing.

Life's too short to be stressed. Call us at 469-4232 today. And if you "like" this entry on Facebook, we'll give you $40 off the repair.

Free Second Opinions

Surgi's offers free second opinions on repairs or replacement recommendations.

We see it all the time. Some service people are deciding whether a system should be repaired or replaced without giving the customer an option.  All systems can be repaired.  The question is, at what point is the repair not worth it.  We don't feel that we should make that decision for you.  Rather, we will give you an accurate cost of the repair and our honest opinion.  Then, you decide.

If you have received a diagnosis by a heating and air conditioning company and would like another opinion, Surgi's will confirm the original diagnosis at no charge.  Just call 469-4232 and ask our dispatcher for a free second opinion or email Surgi's at surgis@hotmail.com.

What Real Estate Inspections Don't Tell You About Air Conditioning

"As part of the structural inspection, the heating and air conditioning systems will be evaluated from a functional and visual standpoint. However, for structures with older heating and air conditioning systems, it may be desirable to have these components evaluated by a licensed HVAC contractor as a separate inspection. The HVAC contractor’s inspection includes full operation of the systems, carbon monoxide testing and a complete evaluation of the systems components. The HVAC contractor will also provide a more detailed written evaluation of these systems."  - REA Inspection Services

This protocol takes the inspection company "off the hook" for any liability regarding the safety and long term operation of the systems involved.  It also places the home buyer in the hands of professional technicians who have proper training to determine, after in-depth testing, whether or not the systems are operating at capacity and are safe.

Furnace Facts

People often fail to have their furnaces checked because, after the smoke smell goes away, the furnace heats the home, money's tight, time is scarce...it can wait.

Think about it.  Every furnace that has ever harmed a family was doing its job heating a home.  Its not the furnaces fault that it had a cracked heat exchanger that was pumping carbon monoxide into the home or flames into the attic or closet.  Furnaces that break can be fixed.  Furnaces that age get progressively more dangerous...some of them kill.

If your furnace is over 15 years old - doubt its safety.
If it's over 25 - know it's dangerous.

Don't take chances with your health.  Call Surgi's today for a total heater clean and check or an estimate for a new heater at 469-4232.

Check Your Heater For Safety and Efficiency

Flame Rollout

Surgi's has developed a non-invasive test for heater safety that a homeowner can perform without the services of a professional heating and air conditioning company.  This test may not be totally accurate but will give you an idea of how dangerous and inefficient your gas or electric heating system may be.  Please click on the link below:

Surgi's Heating and Air Conditioning cautions all customers that the best way to keep your system operating at peak performance and safety is to have the system serviced annually by a trained HVAC technician.

Surgi's is now offering $40 off a one time cleaning or annual preventive maintenance agreement. If you live in the Greater New Orleans area call us at 469-4232 to schedule maintenance. We are also available 7 days a week for your emergency needs. Call us. We're here to help.

Is Your Air Conditioner Making a Cry for Help?

With the machinery in our lives, we either pay a smaller amount for service, or a larger amount for repair.  The same is true for air conditioning units. No doubt your air conditioner got a lot of usage this summer, with the extreme heat that prompted record A/C upgrades.
The good news is that air conditioners are built to withstand longtime use and wear and tear. While this is great for us today, it means we forget to take care of it after a long season. But A/C maintenance is an extremely important task.

Each year without maintenance, your air conditioner loses about 5% of its original efficiency. This is needless waste, considering that the efficiency can be maintained with regular air conditioning check-ups.

The cost of an annual tune-up is therefore recovered with the savings in your electric bill. Not to mention eventual repair costs. And you don't want to be stuck in the heat, frustrated and sweating with a broken AC.

Surgi's is now offering a $40 discount on fall clean and checks.  Save money and be comfortable!  Call Surgi's at 469-4232 to schedule your cleaning today.

More Than You Wanted To Know About Why Gas Furnaces Fail ... But It's For Your Own Good.

Reprinted from the Rusty Firebox.com

Cracked Fireboxes. Causes and Solutions!
What is a firebox or what is a heat exchanger? These two different words are nomenclature meaning the thin layer of metal that separates the good air that you breathe and the bad air comes from burning natural gas in a forced air heater or burning propane in a forced air heater. When natural gas is burning, it emits carbon dioxide, water vapor, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. While carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) not harmful to us carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides(NO, NO2, etc.) and sulfur dioxide(SO2) are. During the burning process, the firebox contains these poisons and steers them towards the vent, which takes them up and out the roof safely away from you and your family. About 170 people a year die from non-automobile related carbon monoxide poisoning.
Heating and air conditioning maintenance should be performed every year

Flames and flame patterns are important for furnace safety
-1. The tiki torch flameThis is carbonizing flame which can soot up the firebox and vent through the roof. Left unchecked it can cause flue fires.
-2. Too much fuelThis flames creates flames the whip up into the firebox and can touch the metal spot overheating it. This flames burns holes in fireboxes.
-3. Too much oxygenThis can cause overheating the same as too much fuel.
-4. The perfect blue flameThis is what the furnace is designed to run on.

Staying Cool In Hot Weather!

In New Orleans, central air conditioners are sized to run 100% of the time when the outside temperature is 92 degrees or higher.  A larger sized system would cool a home at higher outdoor temps but would create a humidity problem. So, how do you stay comfortable when the thermometer hits 100 in July and August?  Try the following suggestions:

"My Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling Well"

Happens every Summer.  Air conditioners that functioned fine all year when the average high temperature was 85 degrees can't keep up when the temperature spikes above 95.  This can be an indication of an undersized system or an improperly installed duct system but 95% of the time it is an indicator of lack of proper maintenance.

While many people switch on their units in the Spring and hope for the best, savvy homeowners know that in order to assure that your air conditioning works in the heat of summer, you have to invest in proper care and maintenance.

Heating and Cooling Maintenance

Why you need regular maintenance - By Trane

You wouldn’t drive your car 100,000 miles without changing the oil. The same logic holds true for your home comfort system. Regular preventative maintenance is the best way to ensure trouble-free operation and peak performance.

Repair or Replace?

“My condenser is an older 10 SEER model.  At the first sign that it is going should I replace it?   When I replace the outside, is there a higher seer rated condenser unit that can be matched up to the inside unit or do I absolutely have to replace both at the same time when I go with a higher rated condenser unit?”   - (Richard from email.)

Condensers.  We can't tell you to automatically replace your condenser.  Here are some rules of thumb we use with older 10 SEER or less systems:

Where To Save On Utilities

In 2000, Home Energy Magazine Online published an interesting article by Jeanne Byrne on the amount of energy used by various appliances in the home.
