Broken Air Conditioner? Repair or Replace?

Making the decision to either repair or replace your old AC System is not easy. It’s a decision homeowners just like you make every day. We know you want to make a well-informed choice. Here are seven things to keep in mind during your decision-making process.

1. Age of your equipment
The costs that come with operating and maintaining older equipment can be expensive. Older equipment is typically less energy-efficient and more likely to break down. So, depending on the age of your current system, it could be more cost effective in the long run to replace your old equipment with a new high-efficiency piece of equipment.

2. Warranty coverage
If your equipment is more than 10 years old, chances are it is not protected by a warranty. Without this protection, major equipment repairs can become costly. That’s why warranty coverage is important factor in deciding whether to repair or replace your equipment.

3. Cost of repair
Depending on the problem and the type of equipment, replacement parts could be difficult to find. Which could mean a long wait time, for parts to be shipped from the factory and also very costly.  Angie's List suggests the following test to help you decide - Multiply the cost of the repair times the age of the system...if the result is under $5,000, consider repair, if the result is over $5,000 consider replacement.

4. Future refrigerant availability
New Federal regulations are phasing out old, chlorine-bearing refrigerants in favor of the new non-ozone-depleting refrigerants. Keep in mind up-dating your equipment and avoid the uncertainties associated with the cost and availability of R-22.

5. Money – saving efficiency
If your system Is 10years old or older, you can expect significant savings in your energy bill by replacing your old system with a new, high-efficiency equipment. With such dramatic energy savings, new equipment could and will pay for its self in just a few years. Plus, you will enjoy better control, greater comfort and fewer maintenance problems.

6. Long-term comfort and savings
If you plan on living in your current home for five or more years, it may make sense to consider replacing your equipment first, you will almost immediately start to enjoy greater energy savings and lower utility bills. Second, the warranty protection of newer equipment will enhance your overall peace of mind knowing if anything should go wrong your wallet and equipment will be covered.

7. Dependability
Finally, don’t wait for an emergency to consider replacing your AC equipment. Don’t get caught in the middle of a heat wave or blizzard, consider your options now and schedule a free estimate for repair or replacement.
