Trane Introduces The First Luxury Air Conditioner For New Orleans - The XV20i and XV18 Variable Speed Condensers

Trane XV20i Variable Speed Air Conditioner
San Antonio, TX.  This week Trane announced release plans for a revolutionary new air conditioning system - the XV20i.  Now homeowners can now upgrade their air conditioning system to true variable speed.

Using newly patented TruComfort Technology, the XV20i places Trane in the "Luxury Market", setting new standards for comfort and efficiency.

The new XV20i varies its cooling output to match the exact needs of a home at any point in time by using up to 700 different speeds.  This means that a 5 ton air conditioner can now function at a 1.5 ton system if that is what the home requires at the time.  Long run times at lower operating costs means substantially lower utility bills and greatly reduced humidity.

Surgi's is pleased to have been selected and certified as one of only 10% of Trane Dealers to have access to these systems in 2013.  Call Surgi's at 469-4232 to learn what true comfort really is.

Why Are My Windows And Air Conditioning Ducts Sweating?

Solutions to the Case of the Sweating Duct

Reprint of an article dated Mar 1, 2007 12:00 PM, By Kevin O'Neill

It's that time of year when windows are sweating and people are wondering if their air conditioning systems are working properly.  Usually they are, but to be better informed we are republishing an article we published last year.  Enjoy.

With the ever-increasing popularity of putting the air conditioning ducts outside the conditioned space; many contractors and homeowners in humid climates are now experiencing sweating ducts. Most of these sweating ducts are carrying cool supply air, although sometimes return air ducts can sweat, especially if the house is kept very cold and the return ducts run through cool vented crawlspaces.
Ducts sweat because the outside surfaces of the ducts are below the dew point of the air in their immediate surroundings. The primary ways to stop ducts from sweating is to raise the surface temperature of the ducts or to lower the dew point of the air surrounding the duct by some form of dehumidification. The dew point of air is the temperature at which the amount of water vapor in the air is the maximum amount the air can hold. The dew point is the same as air at 100% relative humidity (see Table 1).
Make The Ducts Warmer
There are several ways to raise the outside surface temperature of the ducts. The first is to raise the temperature of the air inside the ducts.

The Five Biggest Myths About Saving Energy In The Summer

The following article by Andrew Tarantola is reprinted from Gizmodo (Aug 13, 2012)

This summer has already set temperature records around the nation, and we're still in the dog days of August. With money tight, and temperatures high, there's a temptation to test out unconventional ways to beat the the heat. But these odd home remedies can end up wasting energy and costing more money. Here's how to know what really works when you want to keep cool for cheap.

Myth 1: Cranking the air conditioner lower will make the house cool faster.

Usually not. Trane and Lennox make some nice variable speed air handlers, which can adjust their output to match demand. But most homes’ units have just a single fan speed — on. As such, the house’s temperature will always adjust at a fairly set rate. Cranking the thermostat to 60 degrees to take a shortcut to 70 degrees doesn’t make a difference — the hot air moves at a set rate of speed. By undercutting the desired temperature, you’re simply wasting an extra five degrees worth of energy and money.

Myth 2: Turn off the A/C while you’re out.

If you’re out all day with the A/C off, it takes a lot of work for a central A/C system to bring a hot house down to the desired temperature. Yet it’s even more wasteful to keep it running for eight hours. The answer is to invest in a programmable thermostat, which can let the house warm through the day, then gradually lowering it to the right level before you return.  If you don't want to have to learn how to program the thermostat consider buying a Nest self-programming, programable thermostat.

Adjust the temperature up 7-10 degrees while you’re away, and a programmable thermostat can still save you up to 10 per cent on your annual heating bills. Reduce the demand on the system by closing curtains before you leave, to block the afternoon sun while you’re gone.

How Foam Insulation Affects Air Conditioning and Comfort

Every week we receive inquiries regarding the use of foam insulation in new construction and existing homes.  Often, these questions are from customers referred to Surgi's by their foam insulation vendor.  We frame our advice by discussing the home as a system.

A home is a system consisting of the envelope, the insulating barrier, ventilation, occupants and their lifestyle and a comfort control system.  A change in any of these components affects most or all of the others.

Zoned Air Conditioning

One of the most promising technologies to be developed for the residential air conditioning and heating market is Zoning.  Zoning allows a single air conditioning system to be divided into several areas, each controlled by its own thermostat.

The principle is simple.  The individual rooms in a home gain and lose heat at different rates depending on the time of day, season of the year, the number of windows and doors, the floor on which the room is located, etc.  In addition, unbalanced duct systems contribute to irregular cooling and heating.
Zoned systems vary the amount of heating and cooling in a room or a group of rooms (zones) based on the desired temperature in each area.  This is accomplished by the use of a central control board, thermostats in each zone, and motorized dampers placed in the duct system to adjust the flow of air to each zone.

The advantages of zoning are many including:
  • Increase in system efficiency by 2+ SEER
  • Decreased humidity in the home
  • Improved air distribution
  • Decrease in the total air conditioning required in the home
  • Elimination of hot or cold spots
  • Control of two story homes (more cooling upstairs in summer)

Fall checks

Is Your Air Conditioner Making a Cry for Help?

With the machinery in our lives, we either pay a smaller amount for service, or a larger amount for repair.  The same is true for air conditioning units. No doubt your air conditioner got a lot of usage this summer, with the extreme heat that prompted record A/C upgrades.
The good news is that air conditioners are built to withstand longtime use and wear and tear. While this is great for us today, it means we forget to take care of it after a long season. But A/C maintenance is an extremely important task.

Each year without maintenance, your air conditioner loses about 5% of its original efficiency. This is needless waste, considering that the efficiency can be maintained with regular air conditioning check-ups.

The cost of an annual tune-up is therefore recovered with the savings in your electric bill. Not to mention eventual repair costs. And you don't want to be stuck in the heat, frustrated and sweating with a broken AC.

Staying Cool In Hot Weather!

In New Orleans, central air conditioners are sized to run 100% of the time when the outside temperature is 92 degrees or higher.  A larger sized system would cool a home at higher outdoor temps but would create a humidity problem. So, how do you stay comfortable when the thermometer hits 100 in July and August?  Try the following suggestions:

"My Air Conditioner Is Not Cooling Well"

Happens every Summer.  Air conditioners that functioned fine all year when the average high temperature was 85 degrees can't keep up when the temperature spikes above 95.  This can be an indication of an undersized system or an improperly installed duct system but 95% of the time it is an indicator of lack of proper maintenance.

While many people switch on their units in the Spring and hope for the best, savvy homeowners know that in order to assure that your air conditioning works in the heat of summer, you have to invest in proper care and maintenance.

Heating and Cooling Maintenance

Why you need regular maintenance - By Trane

You wouldn’t drive your car 100,000 miles without changing the oil. The same logic holds true for your home comfort system. Regular preventative maintenance is the best way to ensure trouble-free operation and peak performance.

Repair or Replace?

“My condenser is an older 10 SEER model.  At the first sign that it is going should I replace it?   When I replace the outside, is there a higher seer rated condenser unit that can be matched up to the inside unit or do I absolutely have to replace both at the same time when I go with a higher rated condenser unit?”   - (Richard from email.)

Condensers.  We can't tell you to automatically replace your condenser.  Here are some rules of thumb we use with older 10 SEER or less systems:

Surgi's Gets Another "A" On Angie's List

Thanks to our many customers who see fit to compliment us on Angie's List.  Below is our most recent report:

"Our AC went out, so I started to do my research on what type of unit I would need. I decided to get proposals from three companies on a Trane. When I first called Surgi's, I spoke with Craig Johnson on the phone and he began to educate me on the different types of units. He was very patient and answered all of my questions and then some!

He sent Art to my home to see what I presently had and to assess my needs. After a through [sic] inspection,
